A Look Back: The 628th Meeting of the New England Ophthalmological Society

Festschrift Honoring W. Morton Grant, MD — March 16, 1990

In March 1990, the 628th meeting of the New England Ophthalmological Society (NEOS) convened at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel to host a Festschrift honoring W. Morton Grant, MD. The program, chaired by David L. Epstein, MD, brought together generations of ophthalmologists to celebrate Dr. Grant’s extraordinary influence on glaucoma research, teaching, and clinical practice.

The two-day meeting included a Laboratory Science session at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary’s Meltzer Auditorium, reflecting Dr. Grant’s deep commitment to both the laboratory and the clinic. A photo from the event captures ophthalmologists who gathered to honor his career and contributions.

Among the program highlights was a tribute from David G. Cogan, MD, who shared personal recollections of his nearly fifty-year association with Dr. Grant. In his remarks, Dr. Cogan offered a vivid portrait of Grant’s intellect, curiosity, and integrity—qualities that shaped modern glaucoma science.

The Festschrift of 1990 remains a touchstone moment in the history of glaucoma research—a celebration not just of one man’s career, but of the scientific curiosity, humility, and mentorship that continue to define our field.
